What’s a WOD?
A Workout of the Day (WOD) is a specially crafted exercise routine that targets various muscle groups to enhance your strength, endurance, and overall fitness. The GRIT program at the Academy of Self Defense in Santa Clara offers these dynamic workouts to keep you motivated and on the path to your fitness goals. Today’s Dress to im-PRESS WOD focuses on kettlebell and bodyweight exercises to challenge your strength and conditioning.
Today’s WOD: Dress to im-PRESS
Standing Set: 1 Round
- 3 Strict Press (Left/Right)
- Stand tall, engage your core, and press the kettlebell straight overhead without using your legs.
- 3 Push Press (Left/Right)
- Use a slight dip in your knees to help drive the kettlebell overhead, engaging your shoulders and triceps.
- 3 Negative Press (Left/Right)
- Press the kettlebell overhead and then lower it slowly, focusing on controlling the descent to build strength.
AMRAP Circuit
Perform the following sequence as many rounds as possible (AMRAP) within your chosen time limit (typically 10-20 minutes). Complete all reps on the left side before switching to the right side.
- 5 Swings
- Engage your hips and core to swing the kettlebell up to shoulder height, keeping your arms relaxed.
- 4 Cleans
- Clean the kettlebell from a hanging position to your shoulder, using a quick pull and catching it in the rack position.
- 3 Thrusters
- Perform a squat with the kettlebell at shoulder height, then press it overhead as you stand up.
- 2 Lunges
- Step forward into a lunge with the kettlebell in the rack position, keeping your torso upright. Alternate legs if desired.
- 1 Snatch
- Drive the kettlebell from between your legs up to overhead in one fluid motion, locking out your arm at the top.
Modifications and Equipment Alternatives
- Strict Press/Push Press/Negative Press: Use dumbbells or resistance bands if kettlebells are unavailable.
- Swings: Substitute with a dumbbell swing or a banded pull-through.
- Cleans: Use a dumbbell clean if kettlebells are not available.
- Thrusters: Perform with a single dumbbell or barbell.
- Lunges: Bodyweight lunges are a good alternative if no equipment is available.
- Snatch: Use a dumbbell or perform a high pull as a modification.
Tips for Maximizing Your Workout
- Warm Up: Start with 5-10 minutes of light cardio and dynamic stretches to prepare your muscles and joints.
- Focus on Form: Maintain proper form throughout each movement to prevent injuries and ensure maximum effectiveness.
- Pace Yourself: Find a steady pace that allows you to keep moving without burning out too quickly.
